How to Compare Airline Pet Policies Before Booking
A method for checking the operating airline, route restrictions, pet reservations and total costs.
Start with the operating airline
The airline whose aircraft operates each flight sets the practical pet-transport rules, even when another company sells the ticket. Record the operating carrier, flight number, aircraft type, route and date for every segment. Ask whether the airline accepts your species, breed, age and the number of animals traveling.
Compare the travel options
Confirm whether your pet can travel in the passenger cabin, as checked baggage in a temperature-controlled hold, or through a separate cargo service. These are different products with different booking processes and handling arrangements. Not every airline offers all options, and an approved cabin carrier does not guarantee an available pet space.
Confirm route and aircraft restrictions
Ask about weight limits (including carrier), carrier dimensions, seasonal temperature embargoes, breed restrictions, aircraft changes and restrictions at individual airports. Confirm whether the carrier must fit under the seat and whether the animal must be able to stand, turn and lie naturally. Rules can differ by flight and aircraft.
Get the booking in writing
Before paying a nonrefundable fare, ask how pet space is reserved, whether there is a separate confirmation number, and when the pet fee is charged. Keep the airline response and pet reservation with your booking. Reconfirm after schedule changes: a passenger ticket alone is not proof that the animal is booked.
Compare the real total cost
Include each flight segment’s pet fee, carrier or crate, veterinary paperwork, official endorsements, airport transfers and possible cargo-agent charges. If comparing routes, include the cost of longer layovers and backup accommodation. Use the Budget Planner to keep a contingency amount for changes.
Recheck close to departure
Confirm the pet reservation, current carrier dimensions, check-in location and cut-off time directly with the operating airline. Ask what happens if the flight is delayed or the aircraft changes. Carry accessible copies of the documents and a written record of the carrier’s instructions.
