Flying With a Pet in the Cabin: Preparation and Airport Day
Prepare for a cabin flight with a secure carrier, confirmed reservation and realistic airport routine.
Check cabin eligibility
Ask the operating airline which species and pets are permitted in the cabin. Verify the exact size and weight limits, carrier type, route restrictions and number of pets permitted. Policies vary and may change.
Choose and test the carrier
Measure your pet and compare the carrier against the airlineās published dimensions. The animal should be able to rest naturally within the carrier. Check ventilation, secure closures and absorbent lining; do not rely on a generic āairline approvedā label.
Practice before travel
Introduce the carrier at home and reward calm entry. Increase duration gradually, practice carrying the carrier and familiarize the pet with travel sounds where practical. Never use airport day as the first extended carrier session.
Plan security screening
Ask the departure airport about the screening procedure for animals. At some checkpoints pets are removed from carriers; a private screening area may be available. Use a secure harness if appropriate and follow staff instructions to reduce escape risk.
Plan for delays
Pack copies of documents, medication prescribed for your pet, absorbent liners, cleanup supplies, and a small amount of familiar food. Follow your veterinarianās advice about feeding and hydration, particularly for young, older or medically vulnerable pets.
Respect cabin rules
The carrier generally must remain in its required location during the flight. Follow the crewās instructions and do not open it in flight unless specifically directed. Arrange an appropriate calm space after arrival.
Confirm the full airport-to-aircraft handoff
Keep the pet booking reference and the operating airlineās written acceptance details with your travel documents. Check whether online check-in is available when traveling with an animal and whether the pet must be weighed or its carrier inspected at a staffed counter.
Ask airport security how a pet is screened. You may need to remove the animal from its carrier while the empty carrier is screened; request a private screening area if escape is a concern. Keep a well-fitted harness or leash ready, and never put an animal through an X-ray scanner.
Before boarding, locate the designated pet relief area if relevant and confirm where the carrier must be stowed. Do not open it in the cabin unless crew instructions specifically allow it.
