Connecting Flights With Pets: Transit, Codeshares and Delays

Avoid missed requirements by checking every leg and transit point of a multi-flight itinerary.

Important: Airline policies and border requirements can change. Confirm current conditions directly with the operating carrier, destination authorities and your veterinarian before booking.

Map the complete itinerary

List every departure, arrival and transit airport, country, terminal, operating airline and flight number. Note separate tickets, codeshares and aircraft changes. A single passenger booking does not necessarily mean a pet will be transferred automatically.

Verify each airline segment

Obtain pet acceptance for every operating flight, including the return journey. Ask whether the animal is checked through, whether you must collect and recheck it, and whether cabin-to-cargo transfers are possible. If separate airlines are involved, request written instructions from each one.

Research transit-country rules

Check entry, transit and re-entry requirements with the relevant government authorities. Leaving the secure transit area, collecting a pet from baggage or cargo, or changing airports may trigger import formalities. Also confirm whether the airline or airport permits pets through the intended transfer route.

Allow realistic transfer time

Build in time for pet collection, customs, security, a change of terminal and any veterinary inspection that applies. Minimum passenger connection times may be insufficient for animals. Ask the airline for a pet-specific connection recommendation rather than assuming a standard layover works.

Plan for disruption

Ask in advance who is responsible for the pet if a flight is cancelled, a connection is missed or a replacement flight uses a different carrier. Save airline and local veterinary contacts, and keep food, a water plan, medication and essential documents accessible. Never assume a rebooked passenger seat includes a new pet reservation.

Consider a simpler route

Compare nonstop flights, fewer transfers and ground transport alternatives. A longer but simpler itinerary may reduce handling and border complexity. Prioritize your pet’s welfare and realistic transfer arrangements over the cheapest ticket alone.
