Pet Flight Day Checklist: Before Leaving Home to Arrival

A timeline-based checklist for pet owners preparing for departure, check-in and arrival.

Important: Airline policies and border requirements can change. Confirm current conditions directly with the operating carrier, destination authorities and your veterinarian before booking.

Several weeks before departure

Confirm your pet’s eligibility, reservation and transport mode with the operating airline. Check destination and transit rules, microchip and vaccination records, health certificates and any endorsement requirements. Start carrier acclimation early; do not wait until the day of travel.

Several days before departure

Reconfirm flight details, pet space, carrier dimensions, check-in desk and document validity. Check weather or seasonal restrictions, especially for animals traveling outside the cabin. Save digital copies of documents while keeping originals accessible. Discuss feeding, medication and anxiety concerns with your veterinarian; do not give sedatives without veterinary direction.

Before leaving home

Check the carrier latch, ventilation, absorbent liner and identification label. Offer a suitable opportunity to toilet and provide water as advised for your pet and itinerary. Pack leash or harness, waste bags, medication, copies of documents and airline contact information in your carry-on where permitted.

At the airport

Arrive according to the airline’s pet-specific check-in instructions, which may differ from normal passenger times. Keep the animal secured until staff instruct otherwise. At security screening, ask for a private screening area if you are concerned about escape; the carrier may need to be screened separately.

During the flight and connections

Follow crew instructions about keeping the carrier closed and positioned correctly. Do not remove the animal in the cabin unless explicitly authorized. For connections, verify the pet’s transfer or recheck procedure and confirm that any changed flight still has an accepted pet booking.

On arrival

Collect the pet through the designated baggage or cargo process and complete required customs or veterinary formalities. Move to a secure area before opening the carrier. Check for signs of distress, offer water and a quiet recovery period, and seek veterinary care promptly if symptoms are concerning.
