TRAVEL PLANNING

Public Transport With Pets: Trains, Buses and Ferries

Check operator rules before planning a multimodal trip.

Planning guide: Confirm current transport, destination and insurance requirements with the relevant provider or authority. Veterinary guidance is essential for medical decisions.

Check the specific operator and service

Pet acceptance may vary by operator, route, vehicle, species, size and travel class. A policy for one train service does not necessarily apply to another. Read the current rules for each leg.

Ask about tickets and reservations

Confirm whether your pet needs a ticket, an advance reservation or a designated travel area. Check whether a carrier is mandatory and whether there are limits on the number of pets per passenger.

Plan connections conservatively

Leave enough time for station changes, security checks and access to suitable relief areas where available. Verify that every connecting operator accepts your pet before paying for a non-refundable itinerary.

Prepare for the onboard environment

Use a secure, ventilated carrier where required and avoid blocking aisles or exits. Bring cleaning supplies and follow staff instructions. Keep your pet under control and respect other passengers.

Accessibility and assistance animals

Assistance-animal policies can differ from ordinary pet rules and may be governed by local law. Consult the operator’s official accessibility guidance and relevant authorities for your route.

Confirm every leg in writing

When a journey combines rail, bus, ferry or local transit, make a simple itinerary with each operator's pet rules, the pet ticket or reservation reference, carrier or muzzle requirements, and a customer-service contact. Do not assume a booking for the human passenger automatically includes the pet.

For cross-border services, check both transport policies and entry requirements for the countries involved, including transit stops where relevant. Save policy screenshots or written confirmations in case staff need to verify arrangements.
