Pet Travel Insurance: Questions to Ask Before Buying
A practical checklist for comparing insurance policies before travelling with your dog or cat.
Know which policy covers your pet
Standard travel insurance for people may not cover a pet at all. A pet health policy, a specialist travel extension and a transport providerās liability cover are different products with different terms.
Ask for the full policy wording, not just a marketing summary. Check that your pet, destination, travel dates and transport method are explicitly eligible.
Compare covered events and costs
Ask separately about accidents, sudden illness abroad, emergency surgery, diagnostic tests, medication, hospitalization, emergency transport, trip interruption and cancellation involving your pet. Not all policies cover these events.
Compare the reimbursement percentage, per-incident and annual limits, excess or deductible, any co-payment, and whether claims are settled directly with a clinic or reimbursed after you pay. Currency conversion and overseas payment fees may also matter.
Check exclusions and restrictions
Review pre-existing conditions, waiting periods, age and breed restrictions, routine or preventive care, dental treatment, pregnancy, chronic illness, and any excluded activities or destinations.
Ask whether a missed vaccination, missing travel document, non-approved carrier, or travel against veterinary advice could affect a claim. Coverage may also differ for pets travelling in the cabin, hold or as cargo.
Prepare for a claim
Before departure, ask which documents are required: policy number, microchip details, veterinary records, itemized invoices, payment receipts, diagnoses, prescriptions and transport booking evidence.
Keep the original documents where required, photograph receipts and record the date, time and name of anyone you speak to. Report incidents within the policy deadline and follow any pre-authorization procedure.
Plan emergency assistance
Save the 24-hour assistance number and claims contact offline. Check whether the insurer can refer you to a veterinary clinic and whether emergency treatment requires prior approval.
Do not delay urgent veterinary care solely to obtain insurance authorization; seek appropriate care and contact the insurer as soon as practical. Confirm how reimbursement works if the clinic requires immediate payment.

- Are emergency veterinary costs covered abroad, and what are the limits and deductible?

- Which pre-existing conditions, age limits and waiting periods apply?
- Do I need advance authorization, which documents must I keep, and how quickly must I submit a claim?
- Is there a 24-hour assistance number?
