Source evidence to review

Research leads below are not verified pet-entry rules. Confirm the responsible authority, publication date, applicability to your pet and route, and current requirements before relying on any source.

Destination-specific official source: Not yet identified in this guide. Do not substitute international standards or a neighboring jurisdiction’s rules for the destination’s current requirements.

  • Identify the competent veterinary or animal-import authority for this destination and arrival point.
  • Find the current dog and cat entry instructions, including origin-country and transit conditions.
  • Record the official page URL, publication or update date, and the date you checked it.
  • Cross-check the return journey and carrier requirements separately.

Record findings in the pet-entry worksheet

Territories and islands may have pet import rules distinct from the country that administers them. Confirm permits, vaccination and health certificates, quarantine, permitted routes and transit requirements directly with the competent authority before booking.

1. Confirm entry, transit and return requirements

Start with the official website of Competent local veterinary or biosecurity authority (locate and verify its official website). Locate the current pet import rules and confirm identification, vaccination, health certification, import permission, inspections, quarantine and timing as applicable to your exact case. This homepage is not a verified route-specific checklist.

Also check every transit country and the requirements for returning home. A return journey may have different requirements from the outward journey.

2. Design a pet-friendly route

Possible starting areas include Philipsburg and Simpson Bay. Check pet access to beaches, nature reserves, transport and accommodation; plan realistic routes and veterinary backup.

Choose one or two bases rather than rushing between cities. Check walking surfaces, weather, access to shade and water, emergency veterinary options and pet access at each planned stop.

Route-specific verification worksheet

Before committing to travel, record the answers for your exact pet and itinerary. Do not assume rules for dogs also apply to cats, or that entry rules cover transit.

3. Transport and accommodation

Ask every airline, rail operator, ferry or road carrier on your route whether pets are accepted, and request written confirmation of carrier rules, fees and any seasonal restrictions.

Before paying, obtain written confirmation of the property’s pet policy, species and size limits, additional fees, unattended-pet rules, and nearby relief areas. Ask airlines and other carriers about reservation limits, carrier dimensions, breed restrictions and weather embargoes.

4. Pre-departure checklist

Find and verify official pet entry rules

This guide currently has no external source links. Before relying on entry advice, use this checklist to identify and document the competent authority for your specific journey.

  1. Find the destination government’s veterinary, animal-health or border authority through its official government portal.
  2. Locate the rules for privately accompanied dogs or cats (or your pet’s species), including your departure country.
  3. Confirm identification, rabies vaccination, laboratory testing, certificates, permits and any quarantine requirements.
  4. Check every transit jurisdiction, carrier policy and the requirements for returning home.
  5. Record the exact official URL, issuing authority, publication or update date and the date you checked it.

Record your official sources in the Pet Entry Verification Worksheet. Do not assume a general travel article establishes legal entry eligibility.

How to verify official entry information

Source status: This guide has not been independently checked against a current destination-specific government entry notice. It is a planning aid, not an approval to travel with an animal.

  1. Find the destination's competent government veterinary, agriculture or biosecurity authority and check its pet-import instructions for your species and country of departure.
  2. Confirm whether any transit jurisdiction, carrier or border crossing has separate conditions; also check the rules for returning home.
  3. Record the official page address, the date checked, the responsible authority and any required deadlines or permits in your pet-entry verification worksheet.
  4. If guidance is missing, ambiguous or conflicting, contact the authority directly before booking.

Dog and cat: separate checks before booking

Do not assume that dogs and cats have identical import, transit or carrier requirements. Use the following questions to check your exact route with the relevant authorities and transport providers; these are prompts, not confirmed destination rules.

  • For dogs: Confirm identification and rabies documentation; ask whether dog-specific vaccinations, parasite treatments, breed restrictions, age limits or extra permits apply.
  • For cats: Confirm identification and rabies documentation; ask whether cat-specific health certificates, vaccinations, age limits, permits or carrier restrictions apply.
  • For both species: Confirm any required laboratory tests, official certificate wording, endorsement, pre-arrival notice, inspection booking, quarantine rules and permitted ports of entry.
  • For your route: Check each transit stop, airline or ferry operator, accommodation policy and the rules for returning home. Obtain written confirmation when possible.

Keep separate notes for each pet. Rules can differ by species, country of origin, travel purpose and date, and may change before departure.

Final departure decision: verify before you go

Use these checkpoints for planning, not as universal legal deadlines. The responsible authorities and your carrier determine the actual timing, documentation and eligibility for your route.

  1. Before making non-refundable bookings — Identify the official veterinary or biosecurity authority for the destination, each transit point and your return country. Check species eligibility, entry points, permits, quarantine and carrier restrictions.
  2. When arranging veterinary appointments — Ask your veterinarian to work backward from the official validity windows for identification, vaccinations, tests, certificates and endorsements. Do not assume the same timing applies to every country.
  3. Before confirming transport and accommodation — Get the airline, ferry or rail operator’s pet acceptance conditions in writing where possible; confirm crate dimensions, reservations, temperature restrictions and any connections.
  4. Shortly before departure — Reopen the official government pages and carrier instructions, confirm no rule or schedule has changed, and check that names, microchip numbers and dates agree across documents.
  5. At the final go/no-go decision — Carry originals and accessible copies where required. If a permit, certificate, transit clearance or carrier approval is missing or unclear, seek confirmation from the responsible authority before traveling.

Keep official links, dates checked and outstanding questions in your pet-entry verification worksheet.

Return journey and transit: separate rule checks

A destination entry check is not enough for a round trip. Review each border and carrier separately, using the current official authority for that part of your journey.

  • Origin and return country: Confirm re-entry rules for your pet, including identification, health records, vaccination evidence and any applicable timing or testing requirements.
  • Transit countries and territories: Check whether your pet will remain airside or cross immigration, and whether transit, stopover or transfer creates separate animal-entry requirements.
  • Every transport operator: Check each airline, ferry, rail or road carrier separately, including pet acceptance, booking limits, crate rules and connection handling.
  • Document timing and contingency: Record which authority issued each requirement, when it was checked, relevant expiry dates, and a plan if travel dates or routing change.

These are research prompts, not confirmed legal requirements. Rules can differ by species, route, origin and travel date.

Official-source research checkpoints: Sint Maarten

Research checkpoint only — NOT LEGALLY VERIFIED. Sint Maarten details below summarize published USDA APHIS guidance for departures from the United States; other origins and itineraries require separate confirmation.

Minimum age and eligible pets

USDA APHIS lists dogs, cats and ferrets as eligible under this guidance, and states they must be at least 15 weeks old at travel. Check species and age before committing to tickets.

Import permit and validity

A valid St. Maarten import permit is required; APHIS says it is valid for 30 days from issuance. Confirm the permit application route and intended arrival date with the destination authority.

Health certificate and USDA endorsement

For U.S. departures, an accredited veterinarian must issue the prescribed international health certificate and obtain APHIS endorsement. Confirm certificate validity and endorsement format before submission.

Microchip, rabies and health declarations

The destination conditions document describes an ISO microchip, rabies vaccination and species-specific health declarations. Review the current official certificate with a veterinarian; requirements can differ by origin and species.

Parasites, arrival inspection and onward travel

The destination conditions document describes parasite controls and an inspection by a licensed veterinarian after arrival. Verify the latest timing, arrival arrangements, airline rules, transit stops and return-country requirements.

Sint Maarten — Dutch-side Animal Movement Permit

Official-source editorial update — 2 November 2026. Check the latest authority requirements for your origin, species and transit route before booking. This is not a legal clearance.

Permit required before arrival

The government of Dutch Sint Maarten requires an Animal Movement Permit. Apply at least five business days before arrival; incomplete applications may delay issuance. This also matters when landing at Princess Juliana Airport on the way to French Saint-Martin.

Documents for application

Provide the accompanying person’s passport copy, travel itinerary, international veterinary health certificate and rabies vaccination proof for dogs, cats and ferrets. The EU pet passport alone does not replace the paper veterinary health certificate. First-time entry requires official endorsement of the certificate.

Document format and separate jurisdiction

Application documents must be in English or accompanied by English translations, as PDF files under 5 MB. One application covers up to three animals. The Dutch and French sides have different import regulations; check onward movement separately.

Sint Maarten: practical entry and transit checkpoints

Before booking: Sint Maarten (Dutch side) and Saint-Martin (French side) are separate jurisdictions on one island. Verify requirements for the actual airport, port and side where your pet enters.

Documents and route: For an itinerary that crosses the border or transfers via another Caribbean island, confirm the relevant rules with both the arrival authority and carrier.

Returning to the EU: EU re-entry rules depend on the animal’s origin and travel history. Check microchip, rabies vaccination, any required antibody titration and the applicable certificate before departure, not just before the return flight.

Official starting points: Destination authority or official pet-travel guidance and European Union pet travel guidance.

Planning guidance only. Exact requirements, permits and certificate deadlines must be confirmed with the destination veterinary authority and carrier for the specific journey.
