Hotel Pet Fees Explained: Deposits, Cleaning Charges and Total Cost
Compare nightly pet charges, one-time fees, refundable deposits and possible extras before you book.
Know the different charges
Hotels may charge a per-night pet fee, a one-time per-stay fee, or a fee per pet. Some charge a mandatory cleaning fee for pet-friendly rooms; others charge extra cleaning only if needed. A refundable security deposit is different from a non-refundable fee.
Check whether charges are capped after a certain number of nights, whether different rates apply to dogs and cats, and whether the quote includes local taxes. “Pets welcome” does not mean “pets stay free.”
Calculate the full cost
Compare the final price for your actual dates, room, and number of pets, not just the advertised nightly room rate. Include mandatory taxes and resort fees where applicable.
Illustrative example only: A three-night room at $120 per night with a $25-per-night pet fee and a $40 one-time cleaning charge costs $475 before any additional taxes or other fees ($360 room + $75 pet fee + $40 cleaning). A separate $150 refundable deposit may temporarily increase the amount you must pay or authorize, but it is not part of the final cost if fully returned.

Deposits and unexpected charges
Ask how much of the deposit is held, whether it is charged or only authorized, when the hold is released, and what documentation the property provides for deductions. Your bank may take additional time to release an authorization after checkout.
Read the rules on damage, excessive cleaning, accidents, noise, and leaving pets unattended. Ask whether any extra charge has a published amount or is assessed case by case. Photograph existing room damage on arrival and report it promptly.
Questions to ask before booking
- Is my pet's species, breed, size and number of animals accepted in this room type?
- Is the pet fee per night, per stay, per pet, or a combination?
- Are there additional cleaning, tax or service charges?
- Is a deposit refundable, and what is the release timetable?
- Are pets allowed in all rooms or only designated rooms?
- Can pets be left unattended, even briefly, and are crates required?
- What happens to pet charges if I change or cancel the booking?
- Can you confirm the full price and pet permission in writing?
Request a written breakdown rather than relying on a listing site's “pet-friendly” filter alone.
Cancellations and refunds
Room rates, pet fees and deposits may follow different refund rules. Ask whether a pet fee is charged in advance, refunded after cancellation, or recalculated when a stay is shortened. Also check the deadline and time zone for free cancellation.
If you book through a third-party platform, verify which party handles pet charges and refunds. Save the confirmation, the property policy and any messages clarifying exceptions.
Compare hotels fairly
For each property, record the same dates, occupancy, pet details, room category and cancellation terms. Then compare total non-refundable cost separately from refundable deposit or card hold. A lower room rate may not mean a lower trip cost.
Consider the practical value too: outdoor access, safe walking areas, noise restrictions and whether your pet is allowed to remain in the room. For a broader review, use the accommodation checklist.
