Pet-Friendly Accommodation: Questions to Ask Before Booking
Use this practical booking checklist to confirm that a property is genuinely suitable for your pet, your budget and your travel plans.
Confirm your pet is eligible
Tell the property your pet’s species, breed (if relevant), approximate weight, number of animals and travel dates. Ask about size limits, breed restrictions, minimum age, vaccination rules and whether pets are permitted in your chosen room type.
For multiple pets, obtain explicit approval for the total number. A property that accepts one dog may not accept two dogs or a cat.
Calculate every pet-related charge
Request a written breakdown of the pet fee (per night, per stay or per animal), taxes, cleaning charges, refundable deposits and potential damage fees. Ask whether the deposit is pre-authorized or charged and when it is released.
Include these costs in your travel budget. Confirm whether pet-related charges are payable at check-in or in advance.
Check unattended-pet and shared-space rules
Ask whether your pet may ever be left alone in the room, for how long, and whether a crate is required. Confirm policies for barking, housekeeping entry and emergency contact details. Never assume a hotel permits an unattended animal.
Check where pets may go: lobby, lift, restaurant, terrace, pool area and grounds. Ask about leash requirements and designated pet-relief spaces.
Inspect safety and everyday comfort
Consider stairs or lifts, room access, temperature control, secure windows and balconies, noise levels, nearby walking areas and access to water. For cats, ask about secure screens and places to hide; for dogs, look for safe outdoor relief routes.
Check whether the property provides bowls or bedding, but bring familiar supplies unless availability is confirmed. Save the contact details of a nearby veterinarian for emergencies.
Confirm booking and cancellation terms
Before paying, send a message that identifies your pet and requests written approval for the exact room and dates. Save the response, the full pet policy, the total price and the booking confirmation together.
Ask what happens if the pet policy changes, the approved room becomes unavailable or you must cancel. Check both the accommodation’s policy and any third-party booking-platform terms.
Arrival-day and checkout checklist
At check-in, reconfirm designated pet areas and any rules about room cleaning or leaving the property. Photograph pre-existing room damage where appropriate, keep your pet settled and respect quiet hours.
Before checkout, check for belongings, clean up pet waste and request confirmation of any refundable deposit or additional charges.
