PET-FRIENDLY STAYS

Can You Leave a Pet Alone in a Hotel Room? Rules and Safer Alternatives

Understand hotel rules, assess your pet’s welfare, and arrange safe alternatives before leaving the room.

Booking note: Pet policies and charges are property-specific and can change. Confirm every important detail directly with the accommodation before paying.

Get the rule in writing

“Pet-friendly” does not automatically mean “pets may be left alone.” Some properties ban unattended animals entirely; others allow them only for limited periods, in a crate, or with a reachable contact number. Ask the specific property whether the rule differs for dogs and cats, whether there are noise-related penalties, and whether staff may enter while the pet is inside.

Before paying, request written confirmation of the exact unattended-pet policy, any time limit, crate requirements and fees. Booking-platform labels may omit restrictions.

Decide whether your pet can cope

Even a pet that rests quietly at home may become distressed in an unfamiliar room with hallway noise, new smells and strangers nearby. Barking, scratching, pacing, vocalizing or attempts to escape can signal stress. Never assume a new hotel is a suitable place to practice being alone for the first time.

If your pet has separation anxiety, a medical condition requiring observation, or a history of destructive behavior, arrange supervision instead. A crate is appropriate only when the pet is already comfortable with it and the hotel permits its use; it is not a treatment for anxiety.

Coordinate housekeeping and emergencies

Ask whether housekeeping can be suspended, whether the property provides a “pet in room” sign, and what staff will do during a fire alarm, maintenance visit or noise complaint. Confirm how they will reach you and keep your phone charged and audible.

Do not rely solely on a door hanger to prevent entry. Tell reception about any agreed arrangements and establish a plan for returning promptly if contacted.

Choose safer alternatives

Prioritize pet-friendly dining, attractions and outdoor activities so your pet can join you. If that is not possible, consider a trusted companion, qualified in-room pet sitter or reputable daycare where appropriate for the animal.

Before booking care, ask about experience, supervision, vaccination or health requirements, handling methods, emergency veterinary access, transport and cancellation terms. Verify that third-party sitters are permitted on the premises.

Prepare the room without creating new risks

Where the hotel expressly permits a short unattended period and your pet is comfortable alone, provide fresh water, a safe resting space and suitable temperature control. Remove food wrappers, medication, cords and other hazards. Secure windows and balconies, and make sure identification and contact details are current.

Never leave a pet on an unsecured balcony or tethered in a room. Avoid unfamiliar calming products or sedatives without veterinary guidance. A camera may help you observe your pet where lawful and permitted, but cannot replace a person who can respond quickly.

What to do if plans change

If a hotel changes its policy, your pet becomes distressed, or an outing lasts longer than planned, return to the room and switch to a supervised option. If you cannot meet the property’s rules, ask about an alternative room or a pet-appropriate property rather than leaving the animal in violation of the policy.

Save the hotel’s written instructions and emergency contact information alongside your booking details.
