PET-FRIENDLY STAYS

Finding Cat-Friendly Hotels and Rentals: A Practical Guide

Cat-friendly accommodation needs more than a generic pets-allowed filter.

Booking note: Pet policies and charges are property-specific and can change. Confirm every important detail directly with the accommodation before paying.

Confirm cats are explicitly welcome

A “pet-friendly” filter does not guarantee cats are accepted. Ask the host whether cats are allowed, how many, whether there are age or vaccination requirements, and whether a deposit or extra cleaning charge applies. Confirm your exact cat and reservation in writing, including any rules about leaving cats alone.

Inspect escape and injury risks

Before opening the carrier, close doors and windows and inspect balcony access, loose screens, gaps behind furniture, fireplaces and potentially toxic plants. Ask whether housekeeping or maintenance can enter and request advance notice. Never rely on an ordinary insect screen to restrain a cat; keep balcony access supervised or blocked.

Set up a quiet starter room

Place a litter tray, fresh water, food, familiar bedding and a safe hiding spot in a quiet area away from the entry door. Keep the carrier accessible and allow your cat to explore at its own pace. Avoid forcing contact with unfamiliar people or animals. If there is no separate room, establish a calm corner with minimal foot traffic.

Plan litter, cleaning and supplies

Pack enough familiar litter and food for the stay plus a reasonable delay buffer, along with bags, a scoop, a mat and pet-safe cleaning supplies. Ask where waste should go; do not flush litter unless the property explicitly permits it and the product is suitable. Protect floors and furnishings and document any pre-existing damage.

Reduce stress and plan for emergencies

Choose a quieter location and minimise frequent moves if your cat is sensitive to change. Maintain familiar feeding routines and monitor eating, drinking and litter-box use. Ask your veterinarian before travel about significant anxiety or medical issues; do not give sedatives without veterinary guidance. Keep microchip details, identification, carrier and a nearby emergency-vet contact handy.

Confirm check-in and checkout arrangements

Ask about stairs, lifts, parking and the safest route from the car to the room. Transport your cat in a secured carrier, including through shared hallways. At checkout, place the cat in its carrier before opening the door or allowing cleaning staff in; check hiding places and collect all litter and supplies.
