Hotel Pet Weight Limits and Breed Rules: What to Confirm
Understand weight, size, breed and room restrictions before you reserve a pet-friendly stay.
Understand the exact weight limit
A hotel may advertise “pets welcome” while limiting dogs by weight. Ask whether the limit applies per animal or to the combined weight of multiple pets, and whether it is measured in kilograms or pounds.
Give the hotel your pet’s current approximate weight and expected weight at check-in, especially for a growing puppy. Do not assume a small difference from the advertised threshold will be accepted.
Practical tip: Example: a 20 kg limit may be interpreted differently from a 20 lb limit. Confirm the unit and the property’s actual policy rather than relying on a search filter.
Ask about breed, size and pet-count rules
Some properties restrict certain breeds, large dogs, multiple pets, or animals other than dogs. These are individual property rules, not a universal legal list. Ask for the full policy before booking.
For mixed-breed dogs, explain the pet’s approximate size and appearance if the hotel asks; do not misrepresent a breed or the number of animals.
Practical tip: Ask: “Do you accept my [species/breed or mix], weighing approximately [weight], and how many pets may stay in one room?”
Check the room and property rules
Even when your pet qualifies, only selected rooms, floors or accommodation types may allow animals. Check whether your exact room category is pet-approved and whether access to lifts, common areas, restaurants or gardens is restricted.
Ask whether pets may be left alone in the room, whether a crate is required, and whether barking or damage can result in additional charges. Check the complete fee and deposit policy.
Know how assistance animals differ
Trained assistance animals may be covered by accessibility laws that differ from ordinary pet rules. Applicable protections and permitted questions vary by country and jurisdiction; a hotel’s standard pet-weight limit may not apply in the same way.
Do not assume that an emotional-support animal has the same legal status as a trained assistance animal. For an accessibility-related booking, consult the rules in the destination and contact the property about accessible arrangements.
Get written approval before paying
Send the hotel your travel dates, pet type, weight, breed or mix if relevant, number of animals, and selected room category. Request a clear written reply confirming acceptance and any conditions.
Keep the confirmation with your booking, including pet fees, refundable deposits, cancellation terms and the hotel contact details. If the answer is ambiguous, resolve it before making a non-refundable reservation.
Message template: “Hello, before booking [dates] in [room type], could you confirm that my [pet type], approximately [weight], is permitted? Please confirm any breed or size restrictions, the total pet charges, and rules for leaving pets unattended. Thank you.”
Prepare a backup plan
Save one or two alternative accommodations that can accept your specific pet, especially for late arrivals or long road trips. Reconfirm the primary booking shortly before departure if policies might have changed.
If the hotel refuses your pet on arrival, show the written confirmation and calmly ask for an appropriate resolution under the booking terms. Never leave an animal in an unsafe vehicle while arranging alternative accommodation.
