Pet-Friendly Vacation Rentals: House Rules and Booking Checklist
Read rental policies carefully before paying a deposit.
Check the exact pet policy
Read the entire listing and house rules, not just the “pets allowed” badge. Confirm the permitted species, number of pets, size or breed restrictions, and whether pets can use furniture, bedrooms or outdoor areas. Ask whether the rules apply to every unit in the property. Get approval for your particular pet in writing before paying.
Calculate the full stay cost
Request an itemised quote for the exact dates and number of pets: nightly or per-stay pet fees, cleaning charges, refundable security deposits, platform fees and taxes. Ask when a deposit is returned, what deductions are possible and how damage is documented. Compare the total rather than the headline nightly rate.
Check safety and access
Ask whether the garden is securely enclosed; photographs are not proof that fencing has no gaps. Check balconies, windows, stairs, pools, nearby roads and shared entrances. Confirm parking, lift access, key collection and where dogs may relieve themselves. Cat owners should ask about window screens and places a frightened cat could hide.
Clarify unattended-pet and noise rules
Some rentals prohibit leaving pets alone, require a crate or have quiet hours. Ask whether cleaners or maintenance staff may enter during your stay and how they will notify you. Do not assume that a private rental permits unattended animals just because it accepts pets. Arrange a sitter or pet-friendly activities if needed.
Understand cancellation and damage terms
Save the listing, house rules, written pet approval, cancellation policy and payment receipt. Check whether pet charges are refundable if plans change and whether the host requires an inspection at checkout. Report accidental damage promptly through the booking channel; keep dated photographs of the property at arrival and departure.
Prepare for a comfortable, respectful stay
Bring bedding, food, bowls, waste bags, cleaning supplies and any medication. Introduce the new space gradually and supervise outdoor access. Clean up after your pet, prevent excessive noise and follow furniture and waste-disposal rules. Identify a local veterinarian and a backup place to stay if the rental becomes unsuitable.
