Pet-Friendly Stays

How to Find a Truly Pet-Friendly Hotel

A practical booking checklist for finding a stay that welcomes your specific pet—not just one marked “pets allowed.”

Important: This is general guidance. Always confirm current policies with airlines, hotels, veterinarians and official destination authorities.

1. Confirm that your pet qualifies

A “pet-friendly” search badge is not a booking guarantee. Properties may accept dogs but not cats, set limits on the number or weight of animals, exclude certain room categories, or apply local rules. Contact the property with your pet’s species, size, number and travel dates before paying a non-refundable rate.

2. Understand the total pet cost

Ask whether the charge is per pet, per night or per stay; whether taxes apply; and whether there is a refundable deposit. Request details of possible cleaning or damage charges. Compare the total stay price, not only the nightly room rate.

For a more detailed cost breakdown, read hotel pet fees and include the estimate in the Budget Planner.

3. Check the rules that affect your routine

Do not assume an unattended pet is permitted. Review leaving pets alone in hotel rooms and hotel weight limits before booking.

4. Choose a location that works for your animal

Look for safe walking routes, nearby outdoor relief areas, a practical elevator or ground-floor option, and access to a veterinary clinic if needed. If your pet is noise-sensitive, request a quieter room away from lifts, busy corridors and event spaces. Check local leash rules and whether nearby parks actually allow pets.

5. Get written confirmation before paying

When booking through a comparison website or third-party platform, confirm the policy directly with the hotel. Keep the reply, the booking reference and a copy of the pet policy. If the hotel cannot confirm your particular pet or the total charges, consider a flexible booking or another property.
